January and Mental Health: Why This Month Can Feel So Challenging

January can be tough. After the excitement of Christmas and perhaps a slower pace over the festive period, shorter days, colder weather, and post-festive fatigue can all take a toll on our mood and energy. Many people feel low, anxious, or unmotivated during this month and that’s completely normal!

Expectations to “start fresh” or be productive can add pressure, and the quieter, darker days may make loneliness or stress more noticeable.

Tips to support yourself this month:

  • Keep a gentle routine: Regular meals, sleep, and movement matter.

  • Stay connected: Small chats or check-ins count.

  • Be kind to yourself: Feeling low doesn’t mean failure.

  • Lower expectations: It’s okay to move slowly and focus on getting through the month rather than thriving.

  • Maintain routine: Simple structure, regular meals, sleep, and movement can all provide emotional stability.

  • Seek daylight where possible: Even short walks outside can be beneficial.

  • Practice self-compassion: Feeling low in January doesn’t mean something is wrong with you. You may just require some empathy and support.

If January feels heavier than usual, talking with someone supportive can help. Counselling offers a safe space to understand your feelings and develop ways to cope that work for you.

You don’t have to face it alone.
